Spring Changes Coming to the Island

The weather can't seem to make up its mind — 29 degrees this morning but we're looking at a nice 48-degree day Monday with some actual sunshine breaking through. Classic April on Nantucket.

Speaking of changes, the town's been busy making moves that'll affect how we all get around. That intersection at Surfside and Miacomet is getting converted to a four-way stop for the next month — something anyone who's navigated that spot during summer traffic has probably wished for. And if you've been following the Surfside Crossing housing debate, the state ruled in favor of the 156-unit development, though it's heading to appeal.

On a brighter note, the Natural Resources Department opened Sesachacha Pond to the ocean Saturday morning — always a good sign that spring is really here, even when it's still jacket weather. The Planning Board also approved three new workforce housing dorms, which should help with the ongoing challenge of finding places for seasonal workers to live.

With Daffodil Festival just around the corner and summer meal programs already being planned by Nourish Nantucket, it feels like we're turning that corner into the busy season. The Atheneum's keeping things lively with their usual lineup — tonight's Open Arts Night sounds perfect for a chilly Tuesday evening.

As we gear up for another season, remember to support the local businesses that keep this island running year-round. Check out what our island vendors have to offer — you might find exactly what you need without the ferry ride.
